The Rev. Dr. Kim L. Nelson
The Rev. Dr. Kim L. Nelson is a native San Franciscan. Pastor Kim, as he likes to be called, is also a high school football official and was a volunteer scuba diver for the Monterey Bay Aquarium for 15 years. Most recently, Pastor Kim has been the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, (2012-2016) prior to announcing his retirement in August of this past summer. His retirement was short lived since the news that there was a need for an experienced pastor to become our Interim/Transitional Pastor. Pastor Kim was informed of the need of an interim minister at First Presbyterian by his long time friends Doug and Cheryl Hunt.
Pastor Kim’s passion for ministry began in 1971 with an unassuming dinner conversation at a friend’s home during one of his college breaks. During the dinner conversation which covered a multitude of subjects, Kim’s friend’s grandmother asked him, “Well, have you ever thought of the ministry?” That simple question haunted him for three days and nights prior to Kim seeking the guidance of a local Presbyterian Church pastor in Redlands. The discernment process had begun and through the faithful support of the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Redlands, the Riverside Presbytery and numerous professors, coaches, family members and friends, the professional ministry became his vocational choice.
Kim, while in college, was a member of the summer staff of Mt. Hermon Christian Conference Center near Santa Cruz, CA, held a post for the Christian Ministry in the National Parks in the Grand Tetons and spend his senior year aboard at Capenwray Bible School near Carnforth, England. Kim enjoyed athletics throughout high school and college. After his year aboard and receiving news of his acceptance at Princeton Theological Seminary, wedding bells were ringing for him and Rebecca Ann Hathaway, a classmate at the University of Redlands and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Redlands. Rebecca’s parents, Jim and Kay, were the college ministry advisors during their college years.
Pastor Kim graduated from the University of Redlands with a major in Religion and a minor in Physics. Upon matriculation, he entered Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated in 1977. Kim was the Assistant Pastor of our church from 1977-1980 under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. David McCullough. He left Stockton to become the senior pastor of the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Salinas, CA from 1980-2005, prior to moving to San Francisco. In The City, he served the Lakeside Presbyterian Church on 19th Ave. near San Francisco State University from 2005-2012.
Kim and Rebecca were married at their home church in Redlands, CA, on August 24, 1973. They are blessed with two children, John and Katie. John was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Stockton and took his first steps in our church’s nursery. He is a high school math teacher, a college water polo official and is in the US Navy Reserves. He lives near Orlando, FL. Katie is a legal administrative assistant for a patent and intellectual property law office in San Jose, CA. and was married to Ashley Nazir in July of this year.
The foci of Pastor Kim’s ministries have been relevant worship, engagement in compassionate mission projects, faith development small group ministries and equipping people for ministry outside the walls of the Church.
